Coimbatore City Police to crack down on banned tobacco products in 2025, with strict penalties for offenders.
The Coimbatore City Police will intensify the drive against prohibited tobacco products in 2025.
Officials said that the new City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar has instructed to give special focus on curbing the circulation of banned tobacco products and drugs in the city.
According to the city police, 659 cases were registered under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (COTPA) Act in 2024 with regard to the seizures of banned tobacco products and arrested 763 persons. The police seized a total of 7,112.189 kg of prohibited tobacco products, valued around ₹71,12,189 during the year.
With the support of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), a total of 470 shops, which were found selling gutkha and other banned tobacco products, were sealed. While the police register cases against the offenders, the FSSAI seals them. The joint drive will continue this year, said a senior police officer.
If a shop is found selling banned tobacco products for the first time, the FSSAI will seal it for 15 days. The food regulator will seal the shop for one month and impose a fine of ₹50,000, if it is found selling the contraband for a second time. A third offence will attract a fine of ₹1 lakh, sealing of the shop for three months and suspension of the food safety licence of the shop owner, said the police.
