Canines attached to the dog squad of the Thanjavur District Police were the cynosure of all eyes at the Republic Day celebrations on Sunday.
Members of the public and schoolchildren were treated to a spectacular show at the Armed Reserve Police Parade Grounds on the Court Road, which has now been renamed as “Kalaignar Salai”, venue of the celebrations.
While the junior canine of the dog squad, five-month-old Parter, presented a bouquet to Collector B. Priyanka Pankajam, 18-month-old Leo displayed its ‘obedience’ to the commands from its trainer D. Karthikeyan.
Three-and-a-half-year-old Chola displayed its skills in negotiating hurdles such as negating obstacles and jumping through fire rings and others in addition to scent detection, the much-needed quality in a sniffer dog.
Chola’s scent detection ability helped trace the accused in four murder cases last year, Mr. Karthikeyan added.
