Doctors in Hyderabad save newborn with rare congenital defect by performing life-saving surgery at Little Stars Hospital.
Doctors at Little Stars and She Women and Children’s Hospital in Hyderabad saved the life of a newborn suffering from a rare and critical congenital defect.
The child was born without a diaphragm (muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen). This defect caused vital organs, including the liver, spleen, kidneys, stomach and intestines, to shift into the chest, leading to severe complications, the doctors said.
The newborn’s parents, hailing from Saudi Arabia, travelled to Hyderabad for the delivery. Initial tests conducted at another hospital in Hyderabad identified the complex condition, after which the baby was referred to Little Stars for specialised care.
“We conducted examinations and planned the delivery. The surgical intervention was performed on the fourth day after birth, once the severe lung hypertension was brought under control. The displaced organs exert immense pressure on the lungs, causing severe respiratory complications such as lung hypoplasia and lung hypertension,” said Dr. Satish Ghanta.
