In an incident that has sent shockwaves among the residents of Ballari, a medical doctor at the District Hospital in Ballari was kidnapped for ransom in the early hours of Saturday.
As per the information provided by sources and police, Dr. Sunil, a paediatrician, was abducted from Shaneeshwar Temple at Satyanarayanpet in Ballari city at about 6 a.m. when he was out for a morning walk.
When the doctor resisted the kidnap bid, two people assaulted and overpowered him. Later, they pushed him inside the car and drove off. The incident was captured on a CCTV installed in the area. The examination of CCTV footage from the area suggested that the kidnappers moved towards Moka Road on the outskirts of Ballari city.
It is learnt that the kidnappers later made a WhatsApp call from Dr. Sunil’s mobile to his brother Venugopal Gupta and demanded ₹5 crore and gold as ransom for the release of the doctor. Mr. Gupta, who was president of the District Liquor Dealers’ Association, told the police that the callers spoke in Hindi.
Superintendent of Police Shobha Rani visited the spot and formed several teams to nab the kidnappers and rescue the doctor safely.
BJP leader and MLA for Gangavathi Gali Janardhan Reddy visited Dr. Sunil’s residence and talked to the family members later in the day.
“The kidnap has shocked the residents of Ballari. The criminals have a free hand to commit crimes. The State police have earned a good name. They should ensure that such incidents do not happen. I have talked to the Ballari SP and she had exuded confidence of nabbing the culprits shortly,” Mr. Reddy later told the media.
