Delhi Chief Minister Atishi resigns after AAP's defeat in Delhi Assembly election against BJP.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Sunday (February 9, 2025) met Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena and submitted her resignation to him at the Delhi Secretariat.
Even though Ms. Atishi retained her seat in Kalkaji, defeating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Ramesh Bidhuri by 3,521 votes, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) lost the Delhi Assembly election getting just 22 seats against BJP’s mighty 48.
The result of the Delhi Assembly election that was held on Wednesday (February 5, 2025) was declared on Saturday (February 8, 2025) by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Contesting in the Kalkaji constituency, Ms. Atishi secured 52,154 votes, against Mr. Bidhuri’s 48,633 votes. Congress’ Alka Lamba got 4,392 votes.
Although the BJP emerged victorious in 48 seats and the AAP securing only 22 constituencies, the vote share percentage of the parties stood at 45.56% and 43.57%, respectively.
The Congress party failed to win a single seat for the third time in a row, with most of its candidates losing their deposit.
The winning BJP is yet to declare their Chief Minister. The party asked for votes in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the election campaign, without announcing a CM face.
