Madurai Collector's official car suspension avoided after assurance to comply with court order within a week.
Madurai Collector’s official car, which was to be attached by the Madurai District Court staff on Friday, for failing to comply with a court order, was suspended after an undertaking was given by the authorities to comply with the court order in one week.
As the order of the First Additional Sub Court was not complied with, the court staff came to the Madurai Collectorate premises to attach the Collector’s official car for failing to comply with the court order to give adequate compensation to a man for the land acquired from him.
However, following the assurance given by officials at the Collectorate that the court order will be complied in a week, the court staff left the premises.
The case pertains to the enhanced compensation to be paid to a couple. A total of 2.14 acres of land was acquired from Karuppiah and his wife Meenatchiammal, residents of Thathaneri, for the construction of houses by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board in 1973.
The district administration had fixed a compensation amount of around ₹19,000. Karuppiah moved the court for an enhanced compensation amount. In 1982, the court directed the authorities to pay ₹2.14 lakh as compensation to Karuppiah. The Madurai district administration had preferred an appeal. It was dismissed in 2010 and the authorities were directed to pay the enhanced compensation amount to the couple.
