Collector R. Sukumar reviews development works, renovation of memorial, and agricultural initiatives in Thisaiyanvilai taluk.
Collector R. Sukumar reviewed the progress of development works being implemented in Thisaiyanvilai taluk on Wednesday and Thursday as part of ‘Ungalai Thedi Ungal Ooril’ programme.
Since the Bishop Robert Caldwell’s memorial at Idaiyankudi is being renovated on an outlay of ₹1.03 crore, he visited the memorial and inquired about the progress of the work. He asked the officials concerned to renovate the structure without altering its heritage value since the British missionary and linguist had authored ‘Comparative grammar of Dravidian languages’ during his stay in this very building.
As the construction of groyne and fish landing centre in Kooduthaazhai village is going on at a cost of ₹15 crore to protect the hamlet from sea erosion, he inspected the site measuring about four acres chosen for the construction of Government Industrial Training Institute at Kuttam. He asked the officials to prepare proposals for laying roads to connect the upcoming ITI with the village.
Since farmers of Mannaarpuram, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and Vijayanarayanam have been given assistances by the Department of Horticulture for drip irrigation, sprinklers, apiary, etc. for irrigating coconut, drumstick, groundnut, chilli and other crops in this rain-shadow region, the Collector inspected the farms and interacted with the farmers and inquired about the problems, if any, they are facing in marketing their produce.
As the district has set the target of increasing the quantity of milk being procured by Aavin from dairy farmers from the existing 32,000 litres to 70,000 litres, the Collector during his visit to the villages, appealed to the milk producers to form milk cooperative societies in their villages and supply milk to Aavin.
“We are waiting to extend a range of assistances through Aavin for increasing your milk production and your income. Hence, the milk producers should form a society, register it with Aavin and supply the milk,” Mr. Sukumar said.
During his visit to Suviseshapuram village on Thursday, he inquired about the quantity of milk being purchased from the villagers and checked the functioning of the veterinary dispensary at nearby Ittamozhi after checking the quality of breakfast being served to students at TDTA Middle School at Karaisutrupudur.
