Coimbatore Corporation plans ₹40 crore renovation for Gandhipuram and Singanallur bus stands, improving facilities and addressing maintenance issues.
The Coimbatore Corporation has submitted a detailed project report (DPR) to the Town and Country Planning Department for renovating the Gandhipuram and Singanallur bus stands at ₹40 crore.
Constructed in 1974, the Gadhipuram Central Bus Stand caters to buses heading to Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Namakkal and Sathyamangalam. The Singanallur bus terminus came into existence in 2002 and buses to Karur, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Madurai, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and Dindigul are operated from here.
These two bus stands are in a poor condition owing to lack of proper maintenance. Recently, Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran inspected the bus stands and the civic body readied a proposal for renovation of these bus stands.
As per the proposal, a two-tier bus terminus is in the offing at Gandhipuram Central Bus Stand to accommodate 1,416 bus services and 1.20 lakh people. The facilities planned at the Gandhipuram bus terminus include bus bays, waiting rooms, shops, cloak room, parking for private vehicles, toilets, feeding room, and time-keeper room. The DPR has estimated the total cost at ₹30 crore.
Singanallur bus stand, located on a low-lying land, faces waterlogging during rainy days. The facility is used by more than 10,000 people a day and 300 buses make three or four trips. And the DPR has estimated the total cost at ₹10 crore.
