Coimbatore Corporation submits DPR for Ukkadam Bus Stand reconstruction, with expert panel from IIT-Madras overseeing the project.
The Coimbatore Corporation has submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Ukkadam Bus Stand to the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA).
The bus stand was demolished to facilitate the construction of Ukkadam flyover, which began in 2018 and was inaugurated by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in August 2024.
Following this, the State government allocated ₹20 crore for the construction of two new bus stands in Ukkadam—one at the existing site and another on a vacant land next to the flyover’s down ramp on Selvapuram Road.
The Corporation engaged an expert panel from IIT-Madras to prepare the DPR, and the team inspected the site for the bus stand’s construction on December 9, 2024.
“The preparation of the DPR took slightly longer than expected as some modifications were required after consultations with Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). It was submitted to the DMA a week ago. CMRL has planned to construct a station connecting all four lines, and we have set aside space for their pillars and station after discussions with them. After reviewing the DPR, the DMA suggested design and structural changes, which will be revised by the IIT team and resubmitted in two days,” said Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran.
“The expert panel is also working on the DPR for the Gandhipuram Central Bus Stand, with an estimated cost of ₹30 crore. It is expected to be submitted within 15 days. The plan includes the complete demolition of the existing structure and the construction of an underground parking facility as well,” he added.
