CMFRI celebrates 78th founding day at Thoothukudi regional centre with public access to marine research facilities.
The 78th founding day of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries and Research Institute (CMFRI) was observed at Thoothukudi regional centre on Monday. The institute was also open for the public to explore the facility.
The CMFRI, established on February 3, 1947, celebrated its 78th founding day across India. Headquartered in Kochi, the institute’s regional centre operates in Thoothukudi.
Senior Scientist and Scientist in charge of Thoothukudi regional centre Loveson Edward inaugurated the celebration. Around 1,500 students from schools and colleges visited the facility. The students visited the pearl oyster hatchery, marine museum where a variety of preserved specimen available in Gulf of Mannar region were displayed, marine aquarium, jelly fish lab and fisheries biology lab. They also took part in an audio visual presentation of mariculture and marine fisheries resources, which were meant to create awareness of the importance of marine wealth.
While the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s (BWSSB) policy of allowing apartments to sell treated sewage water is a new alternative water source, the real challenge lies in the transportation of this water. Apartment complexes with surplus treated water are finding it difficult to sell it as tankers are not available, among other logistical reasons.
