Collector S Saravanan advises college students to choose careers wisely, emphasizing the importance of exploring various options.
Choose your career with a clear mind, Collector S Saravanan told college students in Dindigul on Thursday.
Speaking at a career guidance programme organised by The Hindu in association with Shankar IAS Academy at SSM Institute of Engineering and Technology, he said that there were plenty of avenues for the students to choose for their future.
The Collector shared his experiences from his student days and the reason why he chose public service. “As a Collector, it gives him immense satisfaction while helping the needy. I get to reach out to more people in the society,” he said.
Mr Saravanan said that before he set his eyes on the civil services, he worked as a Systems Engineer in the Tata group and explained the significance of transformation from the IT sector to public sector.
Urging his audience, mostly first-year students, the Collector said that in the next four to five years, the future of each one here would be known. “If you opt for civil services, be open-minded and explore various options and do not confine yourself to IAS or IPS, and look for Group I and other options,” he said.
“Gone are the days when young girls were confined to their homes. Today, with support from the government, the gender differences have narrowed down. More women occupy challenging jobs and play key roles. Tamil Nadu stands top in women’s education and employment,” he said.
Shankar IAS Academy Branch Head Arjun Nathan interacted with the students and explained the opportunities available in civil services and presented the salient features.
