This is not just a beach cleanup, but a lifelong commitment, participants said, as per the release, as they collected garbage, most of which had washed ashore.
Musical events were organised at parks, sports grounds, and beaches under the ‘Live Green, Love Blue’ initiative to raise public awareness about the cleanliness drive. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has been conducting daily cleaning activities to maintain Marina Beach.
Ms. Priya said in a press meet that steps were being taken by the Tamil Nadu government to ensure Marina Beach qualifies for the ‘Blue Flag’ certification and that GCC was implementing various measures to meet the necessary conditions. A Blue Flag is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a Denmark-based non-profit organisation, to beaches and marinas that maintain certain environmental standards.
“Marina Beach is one of the longest beaches in Chennai and attracts families on weekends and holidays. Maintaining the beach is a key responsibility. Visitors must dispose of plastic and other waste only in designated bins. I urged the public to cooperate in keeping the beach clean,” she said.
