BEML secures ₹405 crore order for 7 metro trains from BMRCL, featuring cutting-edge technology for enhanced urban mobility.
:
BEML Limited has secured an additional order worth over ₹405 crore from Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) for the supply of seven more metro trains (42 cars) under Phase 2 of the Namma Metro project. This takes the total number of trainsets ordered from BEML to 60, comprising 360 metro cars.
The metro trainsets, designed and developed by BEML’s in-house engineering teams in Bengaluru, will feature a six-car driverless configuration. Built using high-tensile Austenitic stainless steel, the trains are designed for enhanced durability, safety, and passenger comfort. Each car will be equipped with two roof-mounted air conditioners to provide an optimal travel experience, a release from BEML stated.
BEML Chairman and Managing Director Shantanu Roy said, “BEML is proud to strengthen its long-standing partnership with BMRCL by delivering state-of-the-art metro trainsets designed to enhance Bengaluru’s urban mobility. With cutting-edge technology, enhanced safety features, and a focus on passenger comfort, these trainsets will significantly contribute to the efficiency and reliability of the city’s metro network.”
According to the release, BEML, the largest rolling stock supplier to BMRCL, is incorporating cutting-edge technology in the new trainsets, including an IP-based Passenger Announcement (PA) and Passenger Information System (PIS), a Passenger Saloon Surveillance System (PSSS) for real-time station updates, and enhanced security features. “The trains will also feature an LCD-based dynamic route map display and electrically driven automatic doors synchronized with Platform Screen Doors for improved passenger safety,” the release added.
This latest order is an extension of contract 5RS-DM, originally awarded to BEML in August 2023 in a globally competitive bid. The initial contract, valued at approximately ₹3,177 crore, covers the design, manufacturing, installation, testing, and maintenance of the trainsets for up to 15 years.
The metro expansion under Phases 2, 2A, and 2B is expected to significantly boost the metro line in Bengaluru.
