Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Sunday inaugurated the aviary on the banks of the Cauvery at Kambarasampettai on the outskirts of Tiruchi.
Mr. Udhayanidhi said the birds park would be an added attraction to nature enthusiasts and tourists. The park features a pet shop.
The aviary, along with a recreation park, was established under the Namakku Naame scheme at a cost of ₹18.63 crore on 4.02 acres of land situated off the Tiruchi-Karur National Highway. It is set across 60,000 sq. ft. The project was undertaken by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) and the foundation stone was laid in November 2023.
Drawing inspiration from the landscapes described in classical Tamil literature from the Sangam era, geographical themes such as Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham, Neithal, and Paalai representing mountains, forests, fields, seashores, and deserts along with artificial waterfalls, ponds, and lighthouses, are being created within the aviary’s nature trail.
The bird enclosure has transparent meshes facilitating ventilation and natural lighting to replicate their natural habitat. The aviary houses a diverse collection of both indigenous and exotic bird species, all presented in a protected environment.
Around 40 rare and exotic bird species, including finches, macaws, cockatoos, amazon parrots. Pigeon varieties include frill back, Pomeranian Pouter, Shield Spouter, Scandaroon, Diamond Dove, Long Face Tumbler, Maltese, Oriental Frill, Spanish Chorrera, Jacobin, Modena, Short Face, Beauty Homer, Neck Shaker, Carrier Pigeon, Magpie Pouter, King, and Arachangel.
Separate enclosures for different varieties of ducks, reptiles, rabbits, emus, and ostrich, among others, are housed at the park. The park features a koi fish pond and a large aquarium showcasing a diverse array of fish. Facilities to feed the birds and fish have been set up.
