Actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Friday (January 17, 2025) announced that it would not contest the byelection to the Erode (East) Assembly constituency, scheduled to be held on February 5.
In a statement, the party’s general secretary N. Anand said: “Our party president [Mr. Vijay] in February 2024, while announcing his political plunge, had made it clear that our objective was to contest and win the 2026 Assembly polls and not to contest any other elections in between, including the elections to local bodies.”
He also alleged that successive ruling governments in Tamil Nadu had won byelections because of their political power. The party announced that it would not extend support to any candidate in the Erode (East) bypoll.
The seat fell vacant following the death of Congress legislator E.V.K.S. Elangovan in December last year. The AIADMK and the BJP-led alliances have already decided not to contest the bypoll. The ruling DMK and Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) are entering the electoral fray.
