About 30% of work on desalination plant in Perur completed

Construction of Chennai's fourth desalination plant in Perur is progressing rapidly, set to treat 400 million litres of seawater daily.
Work to construct the city’s fourth desalination plant on East Coast Road in Perur is progressing at a fast pace. About 30% of the works have been completed so far, a press release said.
According to the release, the foundation stone for the ₹4,276.44-crore project was laid during August 2023. The plant will have the capacity to treat 400 million litres of seawater daily in order to cater to the growing water needs of Chennai and its peripheral areas. Preliminary works to lay a 1,150-m pipeline into the seabed is in progress. T.G. Vinay, Managing Director, Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, inspected the works on Friday (January 24, 2025).
Construction of the other components such as a lamella clarifier, a reverse osmosis facility, a gravity dual media filter, and a product water tank is also under way. A 59-km long pipeline to distribute desalinated water will be laid till Porur to benefit nearly 22.67 lakh residents. The project is slated to be completed by December 2026.
