The BSF has seized large amounts of Phensedyl, a codeine based cough syrup in West Bengal’s Nadia district on India-Bangladesh international border.
The Border Security Force (BSF) has seized large amounts of Phensedyl, a codeine based cough syrup in West Bengal’s Nadia district on India-Bangladesh international border.
The cough syrup, which is smuggled from India to Bangladesh, was recovered from three underground storage tanks in Naghata area of Majhdia town under Kishanganj police station.
“In this operation a huge consignment of 62,200 bottles of Phensedyl were recovered from three underground storage tanks. The estimated value of which is ₹1,40,58,444,” a press statement from South Bengal Frontier of the BSF said.
According to the border guarding force, this seizure has “exposed the depth of the smuggling network active in the area” and their modus operandi and the recovery of “such a huge consignment of Phensedyl” is being seen as a huge blow to the smuggling attempts in the area.
A spokesperson of South Bengal Frontier, said that more information is being gathered on this complex network of smugglers which may lead to bigger revelations in the future.
The seizure is significant as during the entire year of 2024 the BSF’s South Bengal Frontier seized 1,73,628 bottles of Phensedyl worth around ₹3.6 crore. The seizure also comes at a time when there are tensions along the India Bangladesh border particularly in the wake of political instability in Bangladesh. At certain places along the India Bangladesh border there have been differences among the BSF and Border Guard Bangladesh relating to border fencing.
Earlier this week, the BSF has called for an operational alert along the 4,096-km India-Bangladesh border during the week the nation will observe the 76th Republic Day.
