23 injured in Jallikattu event during Pongal celebrations; medical teams, police personnel deployed for safety.
23 people sustained injuries while participating in a Jallikattu event held as part of Pongal celebrations on Saturday.
The event, organised at Ponneri village in Erumapatti panchayat, was flagged off by Rajya Sabha member K.R.N. Rajeshkumar in the presence of Senthamangalam MLA K. Ponnusamy and District Superintendent of Police (SP) S. Rajesh Kannan. Five medical teams, 25 doctors and other medical staff, three 108 ambulances and three mobile teams were arranged. Additionally, a total of 377 police personnel were deployed in the area, headed by two additional superintendents of police, five deputy superintendents of police, and 14 inspectors.
The event saw participation of 503 bulls and 400 bull tamers, and prizes were distributed to bull owners as well as those who tamed the bulls. Three of the injured were taken to Namakkal Medical College Hospital, while 20 others sustained minor injuries. District Collector S. Uma inspected the venue and the area where the bulls were tested before being let into the arena. Officials from various departments participated in the event that concluded at around 4.30 p.m.
