Nagapattinam hosted its District Youth Parliament Competition on January 24 and 25 under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative. Organised by the district administration, the event aimed at enhance democratic awareness, and promote women empowerment among students, with active participation from 14 teams representing 12 colleges in the district.
The competition witnessed the participation of 264 students, with each team comprising 13 to 20 members, ensuring at least 13 women participants per team. After intense deliberations, the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Kilvelur, bagged the first prize of ₹50,000. The second prize of ₹20,000 went to Team 2 of Dr. MGR Fisheries College & Research Institute, Thalainayiru, while the third prize of ₹10,000 was awarded to A.D.M. College for Women (Autonomous).
The event, supported by the Nehru Yuva Kendra, focused on familiarising students with parliamentary procedures while promoting discussions on women empowerment, gender equality, and inclusivity. Demo parliamentary sessions were conducted prior to the event to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge.
District Collector P. Akash and his district Convergence Team, including Aravind S. and Annly Anna Kurian, were involved in planning and implementing the event under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme.
Youth Parliaments, introduced by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs in 1966, have been instrumental in fostering democratic values.
Sources said the winning team was being considered for a visit to Delhi to witness parliamentary proceedings, offering them valuable insights into the functioning of India’s democracy.
