14 Pamban fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy for poaching, sparking concerns over their livelihood and boat seizure.
A day after fishermen in Rameswaram called off their indefinite stir, 14 fishermen from Pamban, who went into sea were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on Thursday evening on charges of poaching.
Sources said, 87 boats from Pamban had set sail for fishing on Thursday and 14 fishermen on board one of the boats were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy at around 8pm.
Police sources said, the arrested were V. Arockiyam (boat owner), A. Selvam, A. Jeyastan, J. Joshua, S. Simon, S. Muthuraman, K. Mukilan, R. Arockiyam, J. Waldon, V. Mari Selvam, S. Jayasuriya, E. Ribakson, N, Dharman and N. Vigneswaran.
Arockiyam, leader of Pamban fishermen association, said it was deeply saddening to hear the arrest of fishermen and seizure of boat. “After protesting for over a week for the cause of fishermen, the incident that has happened yesterday was a threat to their existence as fishermen,” he added.
The boat which was seized would cost around ₹75 lakh, he added. “One of the fishermen who was also the owner bought the boat recently after taking loans and spending lakhs of money on maintenance,” he added.
As insisted during the protest, the Union government should initiate process to get the fishermen released from Sri Lankan prisons, he noted.
