State government compensates farmers with ₹1,542 crores for crop damages, addresses demands, and elicits views for Agriculture Budget.
The State government has provided compensation amounting to ₹1,542 crores to farmers whose crops were damaged due to natural calamities over the past four years, said Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, M.R.K. Panneerselvam.
The Minister chaired a meeting at the Salem Collectorate on Wednesday to elicit views from farmers for inclusion in the Agriculture Budget next month.
Addressing the media, the Minister recalled that four years ago, farmers staged protests demanding compensation for crop losses caused by floods, droughts, and other natural calamities. “After the DMK came to power, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin ensured immediate compensation for crop damages, while ₹5,542 crores in insurance claims were settled without arrears,” he said.
The Minister also noted that the demands of sugarcane farmers were addressed, and their payment arrears cleared promptly.
Mr. Panneerselvam added that in previous meetings, farmers had presented 1,991 demands, of which 977 were fulfilled through announcements in the last four Agriculture Budgets. “Farmers have expressed confidence that their requests are being addressed by the government,” he added.
When asked about farmers’ current demands, the Minister said they were seeking value-added products, training programmes, and increased mechanisation in the sector to enhance their profits.
Farmers’ organisations and representatives from Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Erode, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Namakkal, Nilgiris, and Kallakurichi participated in the meeting and presented their expectations for the budget.
