Construction of omnibus terminus at Panjapur on Tiruchi-Madurai Highway gaining momentum, expected to complete by December 2025.
Work on constructing an omnibus terminus at Panjapur on Tiruchi-Madurai Highway is likely to gain momentum in the coming weeks, according to officials.
The omnibus stand is being established on an area of about four acres adjacent to the Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT), at a cost of ₹17.60 crore. Of this, ₹8.80 crore comes from the Capital Grant Fund of the State government and the remaining cost is borne by the Tiruchi Corporation from its General Funds.
The construction began in November, and the civic body expects to complete the work by December 2025. A senior Corporation official said that the work at the terminus will pick up pace in the coming weeks as the construction of the IBT is in full swing ahead of its opening next month.
The civic body has planned to convene a meeting with the omnibus operators association and other stakeholders to discuss the infrastructural requirements and amenities at the terminus.
The bus stand would have two platforms with 82 bus bays, 45 bays for short-distance buses and 37 for mobile buses. According to sources, in a day, about 75 buses are being operated up and down, and around 800 buses ply via Tiruchi.
Meanwhile, the omnibuses continue to park on roadsides on VOC Road, Major Saravanan Road, Rockins Road and around the Central Bus Stand, causing traffic snarls, especially during peak hours. However, it is said that there is a plan to operate omnibuses from the Central Bus Stand after the opening of the upcoming IBT until the new omnibus terminus is commissioned.
