Construction work has begun on a new 50-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Mannargudi Government District Headquarters Hospital, strengthening critical care infrastructure in the region. The ₹20-crore project, undertaken by the Department of Medical and Public Health, will cover an area of 47,180 sq. ft. across five floors.
The ground floor of the upcoming facility will feature a waiting area, duty doctor’s room, examination room, CT scan, and X-ray rooms, an observation room, and restrooms. The first floor is planned to include a post-delivery ward, neonatal resuscitation room, septic labour room, pre-delivery room, and staff amenities. On the second floor, a 24-bed isolation ward will be set up along with staff rooms and storage facilities. The third floor will house the main ICU, isolation rooms, and emergency care units. The fourth floor will accommodate a recovery ward, an operation theatre, an autoclave room, and an anaesthesia room. The fifth and final floor will feature a dialysis ward, post-natal care unit, and nursing stations.
The project aims at expanding the hospital’s capacity to handle emergency and specialised medical cases, benefiting patients in Tiruvarur district and nearby areas. Health officials expressed confidence that the new facility, once completed, will significantly improve access to advanced medical care in the region.
