Elapully panchayat opposes State government's decision to allow controversial brewery firm Oasis Commercial to set up liquor plant.
The Elapully grama panchayat has asked the State government to withdraw the permission given to Oasis Commercial to set up a liquor plant in the panchayat. An emergency meeting of the panchayat governing council held on Monday asked the government to review its decision in the wake of protests brewing against the proposed liquor plant.
The State government decision to permit Oasis Commercial, a controversial brewery firm allegedly involved in Delhi brewery scam, to set up a ₹600 crore liquor plant at Mannukkad in ward 6 of Elapully panchayat has evoked sharp protests from different sections, including the Congress and the BJP.
While the BJP members in Elapully panchayat council supported the ruling the Congress’s resolution against the liquor plant, CPI(M) members chose to sit on the fence. They appeared ambivalent as they said they would support the State government even when standing with the people in the panchayat.
The panchayat council took up the matter with urgency considering the water shortage in the area. In the 22-member council, eight United Democratic Front (UDF) members and five BJP members opposed the government decision to permit the brewery. While five Left Democratic Front (LDF) members chose neither to oppose nor to support the government decision, three LDF members stayed away from the session.
The Congress and the BJP said that they would continue their protests until the government withdrew the project. The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has agreed to provide water for the project, which envisages a foreign liquor bottling unit in the first phase, an ethanol plant in the second phase, and a malt spirit manufacturing unit in the third phase. A brewery will be in the fourth phase.
The panchayat council pointed out that the plant was being planned on 24 acres within Kanjikode industrial zone. It raised concerns of furthering the shortage of water in the panchayat when the liquor plant becomes functional.
In the council’s letter to the State government, Elapully panchayat president Revathy Babu pointed out that the proposed plant would further deplete the ground water level in the panchayat and would deprive farmers of their water.
