The Puducherry police have arrested the owner of a two-wheeler, who allowed an underage boy to ride his bike rashly while in an inebriated state, causing a fatal accident on Kamaraj Salai in the Union Territory (UT) two days ago.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Traffic, Praveen Kumar Tripati, in a release, said the owner of the bike, who is the uncle of the juvenile rider, was arrested under Section 199 (A) of M.V. Act. The juvenile, who was riding a Pulsar motorbike, rammed into a scooter that was also being ridden by an underage boy.
The rider of the scooter and his friend — also a minor — who was riding pillion, sustained injuries to their head and chest. They were taken to the Government Hospital, where the minor rider succumbed to his injuries.
“We have arrested the uncle of the boy who rode the bike. The minor was allowed to ride the bike by his uncle/owner. He had also consumed liquor. The juvenile delinquent will also be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board for proper custody. We have added Section 4 read with 181, Section 199 (A), and Section 185 of the M.V, Act,” the SSP said.
Since the minor bike rider hails from Tamil Nadu, the Puducherry police has planned to write to the RTO of the district concerned not to issue a licence to the juvenile until he turns 25. The RTO of Puducherry will be requested to suspend the registration of the Pulsar motorbike for 12 months, the release said.
“We appeal to the public and parents not to allow their underaged children to drive any vehicles to avoid legal actions against the parent/guardian or owner of the vehicle,” the SSP said.

In addition to enforcement, BMRCL plans to roll out a wide-reaching awareness campaign aimed at educating commuters about the ill-effects and penalties associated with using tobacco products in metro areas. Officials have appealed to the public to support the initiative and help maintain a pleasant commuting environment for all.
