Two more persons have been arrested and remanded in connection with the double murder case reported under Perambur police station limits in Mayiladuthurai district on February 14, 2025.
According to the police, Munusamy, 47, and his wife Manjula, 48 — both residents of North Street, Muttam — were taken into custody on Monday (February 17, 2025). They are the parents of two of the accused persons, Thangadurai and Muvendan, who have already been remanded. The couple was sent to judicial custody till February 28, 2025.
The case pertains to the murder of two men following a clash in Muttam village on February 14. The police said M. Muventhan, 24, of North Street, Muttam, had a dispute with R. Dinesh, 28. On Thursday evening, an argument between the two escalated into a fight but was quickly defused by local residents. However, the following night, when Dinesh was talking to his friends — K. Harish, 25, K. Ajay, 19, from Muttam, and B. Sakthi, 20, from Srinivasapuram — three men attacked them with knives.
Harish sustained severe injuries to his abdomen, while Sakthi was stabbed in the back. Ajay suffered injuries on his hand. They were rushed to the Mayiladuthurai Government Hospital, but Harish and Sakthi succumbed to their injuries on the way.
The Perambur police arrested Muventhan, M. Thangathurai, 28, and R. Rajkumar, 34, the next day and remanded them in judicial custody. The police contended the murders were a result of a personal dispute and denied allegations linking them to illicit liquor trade. However, the families of the victims and local residents alleged the students were killed for opposing the sale of spurious liquor in the area.
