Pallikonda police on Tuesday busted an inter-state cattle smuggling racket and rescued 33 animals being transported in cruel conditions on the Chennai-bengaluru highway in Vellore.
About 30 animals mostly cows and bulls were rescued. Initial inquiry revealed that the animals were illegally transported from Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh to slaughterhouses in Pollachi of Coimbatore and Kerala.
Lorry driver K. Pawan, 27 and cleaner V. Manjunath, 19, of Karnataka were arrested. The police said that they were on regular patrol duty at the toll gate near Pallikonda, when they stopped the container lorry.
The driver gave contradictory statements to inquiries regarding the consignment.
The animals were crammed into the unhygienic container and chilli powder was purportedly thrown into their eyes to prevent them from sleeping.
Based on a complaint filed by animal activist R. Raghuram Sharma, the police registered cases under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act against the duo. A probe is under way.
The rescued animals were sent to a private goshala in Tirupattur for immediate care and treatment.
