Tamil Nadu, which has declared itself as a pioneer of the Iron Age, following carbon dating results from reputed institutes tracing iron samples from the State to 3345 BC, must now curb corruption with iron hands and declare itself as a pioneer in the destruction of corruption too, said Justice S.M. Subramaniam of the Madras High Court on Friday (January 24, 2025).
The judge made the oral remark while presiding over a Division Bench along with Justice M. Jothiraman. He told Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) R. Muniyapparaj that the declaration regarding the Iron Age having begun on Tamil soil must be extended further to deal with the issue of corruption too.
“Yesterday, Tamil people were declared as a pioneer for having used iron ore 5,300 years ago. Same way, corruption must be destroyed with an iron hand, so that Tamil Nadu will be a pioneer in the destruction of corruption too. Do that,” the judge told the APP. He was referring to a statement made by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday (January 24, 2025).
The Tamil Nadu Archaeology department had sent 28 samples lifted from the Sivagalai archaeological site in Thoothukudi district for radiocarbon dating to the beta analytic testing laboratory at Miami, Florida, and got a few other samples tested at the Birbal Sahni Institute of Paleosciences in Lucknow and the Physical Research Laboratory at Ahmedabad before making the declaration.
After releasing a report titled ‘Antiquity of Iron: Recent radiometric dates from Tamil Nadu’, authored on the basis of the test results, the Chief Minister had on Thursday tweeted: “With immense pride and unmatched satisfaction, I have declared to the world: the Iron Age began on Tamil soil.”
The declaration reverberated in the Madras High Court on Friday with Justice Subramaniam referring to it during the court proceedings.
DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday (January 24, 2025) took a dig at leaders of political parties who were “desperate to come to power” soon after launching their political outfits. He further criticised politicians who were “pretending” and staging a “drama” and not genuinely working for the welfare of the Tamil society.
