Investigation into negligence of private doctor leaving surgical mop inside woman after C-section sparks outrage and calls for justice.
A six-member team of officials and doctors will inquire into alleged negligence of a private doctor from Puttur leaving a surgical mop inside the body of a woman following a Caesarean section, said Dakshina Kannada District Health and Family Welfare Officer H.R. Thimmaiah.
Dr. Thimmaiah said the team will inquire in a week’s time and send the report to the Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, for necessary action.
In a series of posts on X, the woman’s husband, a farmer, said his wife delivered a baby on November 27, 2024, through C-section at a private hospital in Puttur. After a week of discharge from the hospital on December 2, 2024, she had a fever for four days. When she went to the hospital, the doctor gave some tablets. However, she told the doctor about some difference in one side of her stomach, and made him refer her for an ultrasound.
Though the ultrasound showed a 10-cm long foreign body in the stomach, the ultrasound technician did not reveal it to patient’s husband. When she went to the doctor, the latter ruled out chances of a foreign body and said it was a ‘haematoma’. The doctor prescribed medicines and said the haematoma will gradually dissolve.
A few days later, the woman faced acute pain in the joints, wrist and legs making it difficult for her to walk, stand and lift her baby for breast-feeding. She was referred to orthopaedic and arthritis specialists. Following a CT scan, a specialist found a surgical mop inside her stomach.
As the infection had spread to her lungs and other parts of the body, immediate surgery was done to remove the foreign body and save her life. The doctor, who did the C-section, refused to admit his negligence and pay compensation.
The woman’s husband said that while their newborn baby suffered for want of breast-feeding, he too faced hardship as he could not irrigate his land during the period of his wife’s treatment. Seeking justice for the mental agony, stress and pain they have undergone because of this clear case of medico-negligence, the woman’s husband tweeted, “With the sufferings we underwent for this long time, we have no water left (for tears) in our eyes”.

In a breathtaking display of musical prowess, the Singspirations, a Tiruchi-based choir group, in collaboration with the Glauben Ensemble and the Genesis Chamber Orchestra, presented a sublime performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem in D minor, K. 626, in its entirety, mesmerising audiences.
