Aluva State Seed Farm offers eco-friendly Christmas trees, part of its carbon-neutral initiative, available for ₹100-₹400.
The Aluva State Seed Farm, which was declared India’s first carbon-neutral farm in 2022, is ready with ‘green’ Christmas trees in place of those made of plastic and other non-biodegradable materials.
The seed farm, which comes under the Department of Agriculture and the Ernakulam district panchayat, has come out with ‘live and green’ Christmas trees for the second time, said a communication from the Assistant Director of Agriculture at the seed farm.
The natural Christmas trees — two-year-old Araucaria trees, a genus of evergreen coniferous trees — have been painted according to the themes. There are also other smaller trees that can go as decorations with the Christmas trees.
The Christmas decorations and Christmas trees are meant to make the festivities more eco-friendly. The trees are available at between ₹100 and ₹400 at the Aluva Thuruth seed farm outlet.
The trees have also been made available at the Muzuris boat jetty outlet on an invitation from the Muzuris project.
The green Christmas trees add another chapter to the more than a century-old seed farm, which was launched as a demonstration and instruction farm. The 13-acre farm was declared an organic farm in 2012 and has since worked to achieve better environmental accountability.
At the time of the farm being declared carbon-neutral, carbon emission was 43 tonnes a year and the sequestration level was 170 tonnes.
