Forest Department revokes sandalwood permit from Karnataka emporium, books two individuals for unauthorized transportation and storage.
Forest Department officials on Tuesday revoked the sandalwood storage permit of the Karnataka government-owned Cauvery Handicrafts Emporium on M.G. Road, managed by Karnataka State Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd. (KSHDCL), following a raid on the premises and booked two people related to the case.
The Forest Department officials said they raided the emporium after receiving information that over 4 kg of sandalwood had been transported to the Cauvery Handicrafts Emporium without the department’s permission.
“Normally, a permit is required for transporting sandalwood in quantities exceeding 4 kg. In this case, neither the person who purchased the sandalwood nor the one who sold it to the emporium obtained the necessary transit permit from the Forest Department. As a result, we raided the emporium and registered a case,” a source from the Forest Department said.
According to officials, they have booked Narayana Murthy, the manager of Cauvery Handicrafts Emporium, and Gaurav Saragoi, the alleged supplier of the sandalwood.
Officials revealed that the supplier had provided 435 kg of sandalwood over the past six months. “We are now investigating the case to determine how and when the sandalwood was supplied to the emporium, why the emporium failed to obtain the transit permit, and the origin of this sandalwood,” officials added.
