A host of programmes were held by district health authorities to observe World Tuberculosis (TB) Day on Monday, aimed at raising awareness about the infectious disease.
In Tiruchi, a function to mark the day at the District Collectorate was led by R. Rajalakshmi, District Revenue Officer, with an oath-taking ceremony in the presence of S. Savithri, Deputy Director Medical Services – TB, G.C. Gopinath, Joint Director of Medical and Rural Health Services, V.C. Hemachand Gandhi, District Health Officer, S. Kumaravel, dean, K.A.P.V. Government Medical College, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, M. Vijay Chandran, City Health Officer, and senior officials.
Speakers discussed ways to implement this year’s theme ‘Yes! We Can End TB! Commit, Invest, Deliver’. Nutritional support packages were given to 10 patients.
Certificates of appreciation signed by District Collector M. Pradeep Kumar were presented to personnel, volunteers, nutrition sponsors, and others involved in the effort to eliminate TB.
In Perambalur, over 200 persons participated in a rally launched by District Collector Grace Pachuau from Palakkarai to Sangupettai on Monday. Deputy Director (Tuberculosis) R. Nedunchezhian was present.
According to official figures, the district has 302 TB patients and 18 persons were diagnosed with HIV and TB.
M. Periyasamy, chief medical officer, inaugurated an awareness programme at the Government Hospital in Alangudi, in Pudukottai District on Monday. Physicians Liberthi, Mohan Raj, and Usha Rani participated and screened patients for TB.
