The Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) at Periya Milaguparai in Tiruchi has received the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) certification from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) for upholding high standards of quality at the facility.
The UPHC secured 92.71% and fulfilled all requirements for the certification. The facility received certification for adhering to the highest standards in healthcare, especially in maternal and child care, implementing strict hand hygiene for employees and asepsis, disinfections and sterilisation, upkeep of equipment and infrastructure, affordability of services and patient satisfaction. This is the fourth UPHC to receive an NQAS certification in Tiruchi.
A national assessment team had inspected the centre recently for an assessment before the certification was issued.
According to M. Vijay Chandran, City Health Officer, specialists assessed the quality of infrastructure, including services offered to expectant mothers, treatment for non-communicable diseases, and the cleanliness of the health centre facility that caters to the needs of the people residing in the locality.
As a result, the UPHC has won a cash reward of ₹2.5 lakh. About 25% of the prize money will be given as incentives to the healthcare workers at the centre and the rest will be used for the patient welfare and development of the UPHC.
The health centre handles around 220 patients a day and conducts two deliveries a month on an average. It has a doctor, three staff nurses, four urban health nurses, a sector health nurse, a pharmacist, a lab technician, and two multipurpose health workers.
The two-storey facility has six beds and offers treatment in general medicine, maternity health, new-born, and child health, immunisation, family planning, communicable disease, non-communicable disease, and accident and emergency. It has a pharmacy and a lab.

In a breathtaking display of musical prowess, the Singspirations, a Tiruchi-based choir group, in collaboration with the Glauben Ensemble and the Genesis Chamber Orchestra, presented a sublime performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem in D minor, K. 626, in its entirety, mesmerising audiences.
