The bus was headed for Madurai from Chennai when the accident took place at around 1.30 a.m. The driver, A. Babu, reportedly lost control of the vehicle after one of the tyres of the bus got punctured near Othakarai, Yagapapuram. Passengers were quickly evacuated from the bus that overturned, and it later burst into flames, police sources said.
F. Pushpam, 62, a native of Neduvillai, Kanyakumari, was killed and 22 other passengers were injured in the accident. The injured were immediately rushed to Manapparai Government Hospital, where Ms. Pushpam was declared dead upon arrival.
A case was filed against the driver and the accident is being investigated by the Thuvarankurichi police.
