The government of Karnataka will release ₹46 crore for the construction of a multi-speciality hospital in Saundatti in Belagavi district, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Gundu Rao announced on March 23.
“Steps will also be taken to build new and well-equipped hospitals in Ramdurga and Kittur taluks,” he announced after inaugurating a health camp in the temple town on March 23.
A mother and child hospital, and a new district hospital have already been inaugurated in Khanapur taluk. A district hospital-level facility will be built in big towns like Gokak. Over 38,000 patients have been given treatment for eye ailments and to prevent blindness. In the coming days, a special programme will be organised to provide medicines to every family and person under the Home Health Scheme, the Minister said.
Public Works and district In-charge Minister Satish Jarkiholi said that the health camp was a historic event.
“There has never been such a big programme in the region before. It was made possible by the special interest of Vishwas Vaidya, the MLAs of this area. Additional funds have already been provided in this budget for the construction of a new public hospital building,” Satish Jarkiholi said.
“The government of Karnataka is taking steps to develop Saundatti Yallamma temple and Saundatti taluk. A special grant of ₹200 crore is being provided by the government for the development of the region,” he said.
Mr. Vaidya said over 8,000 patients had been screened in the camp. He sought the government’s help in improving health infrastructure in the taluk. He sought assistance for a hospital in Munavalli town, which is surrounded by 25 villages with a total population of over 40,000. He demanded upgradation of the primary health centre in Munavalli to a community health centre.

To make city bus drivers fall in line with traffic rules, the Mangaluru City police henceforth will begin registering FIRs against traffic violations under Section 281 (reckless driving) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal said on Wednesday. So far, they were only imposing penalties for traffic violations.
