Referring to Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta’s demand to combine the railway line and the highway in the proposed Shiradi Ghat tunnel road on Mangaluru-Bengaluru route, Mr. Somanna said the Railway Ministry and the Union Road Transport Ministry would work together on the proposal. “We will do combined tunnel project for Shiradi,“ he said and added not one VB Express, two could be operated between Bengaluru and Mangaluru thereafter.
Responding to the demand of MLAs and MPs of coastal region to provide adequate Railway Under Bridges and Over Bridges to eliminate level crossings on busy roads in the region, Mr. Somanna said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already ordered that all such works would be undertaken by the Railway Ministry itself. Hitherto, such works were done on 50:50 cost sharing between the Railways and the State government concerned.
Stating that the Ministry attaches utmost importance to safety, Mr. Somanna said a coordination committee under Southern Railway’s Palakkad Division would examine proposals by legislators and implement the same.
The Ministry has approved the detailed project report (DPR) for upgrading Mangaluru Central Station to world-class standards and tenders would be called shortly, he added.
Speaking earlier, Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader urged the Minister to usher in railway infrastructure development in the region. “We respect Kerala; but one would be astonished to see Railway development in that State while Karnataka lags behind,” he regretted. He congratulated the Ministry for extending the passenger train service to Subrahmanya Road and said it would herald economic growth.
