Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi inaugurates shelter for homeless women, emphasizing dignity and rights for mental health recovery.
Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi on Monday inaugurated the “Namma Thoothukudi Maghizhvagam- a home of hope for women”, a shelter for homeless women.
The shelter, established in Thoothukudi with 20 beds, aims to care for individuals, who have recovered from mental health issues but are unable to return home or not accepted by their families. The shelter was set up by the Rural Development department in partnership with The Banyan and R-Soya trust.
Speaking at the inauguration, Ms. Kanimozhi highlighted the past mistreatment of individuals with mental health issues stating, “In the past people with mental health problems were confined to rooms or chained and were treated horribly. They were denied dignity and rights. But, today we have reached a point where we understand that they deserve all the rights and opportunities like anyone else.”
She hailed the efforts of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin along with various non-governmental organisations which are launching welfare schemes such as “Meendum Illam” for the people of the State. She added that the Chief Minister has been implementing these welfare programmes for the benefit of the people and not for the vote bank politics.
The event was attended by Minister of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment P. Geetha Jeevan, Collector K. Elambahavath, Corporation Commissioner L. Madhubalan and Mayor Jegan Periyasamy.
Earlier in the day, Ms. Kanimozhi also inaugurated an art exhibition based on ‘Tirukkural’ organised to commemorate the silver jubilee of the installation of Tiruvalluvar statue in Kanniyakumari.
The highlight of the event was a fashion show organised by fashion designer Prasad Bidapa where models walked the ramp with Indian street dogs. This was followed by Indie pet parents walking the ramp with their pets, and sharing their stories.
