A 42-year-old jewellery appraiser at a nationalised bank in Tirupattur was arrested for embezzling ₹1.3 crore by pledging fake jewellery.
Police said that the arrested person was identified as K. Baskaran, a native of Karuppanur village near Jolarpet. Initial inquiry revealed that Baskaran had been working as an appraiser in the bank since 2011. During a surprise inspection at the bank, senior officials found fake jewellery weighing 200 sovereigns was pledged by creating fake customer accounts.
Investigation revealed that fake jewellery had been pledged in 42 different names. The team also found that Baskaran had been committing the fraud a few months after he joined the bank. He had been pledging small quantities of jewellery at a time over the years to evade suspicion from senior bank officials.
Following the discovery, bank officials registered a complaint with Tirupattur police. A probe is underway.
