Heavy overnight rain and thunderstorms lash Hyderabad, trigger waterlogging

Heavy rainfall in Hyderabad brings relief from heat but causes waterlogging, traffic disruptions; IMD predicts more rain later.

Heavy rainfall in the early hours of Saturday (March 22, 2025) brought much-needed relief to Hyderabad residents from the scorching heat but also led to severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions across the city.

According to data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), the highest rainfall recorded as of 7 a.m. was 54.5 mm at the University of Hyderabad, followed by 50.8 mm in Vivekananda Nagar, 48.8 mm in Madhapur, 48.5 mm in Borabanda, and 47.5 mm in Rajendra Nagar. Other areas, including Gachibowli (45.8 mm), Kukatpally (39.3 mm), Kapra (39 mm), and Cherlapally (38.8 mm), also received significant rainfall.

The heavy downpour caused severe waterlogging in multiple areas, leading to slow-moving traffic on Saturday morning. The Kondapur underpass towards Gachibowli and the Lingampally railway underbridge (RUB) were submerged, affecting commuters. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials and traffic police were deployed to manage the situation and ease congestion.

In addition to traffic woes, many residents experienced power outages during the early hours, prompting several to voice their frustrations on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a cloudy sky for the city, with light rain or thunderstorms, accompanied by gusty winds, likely to occur towards the evening.
