Chennai Mayor R. Priya has launched an Intensive Student Enrolment Campaign for Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) schools for the 2025-26 academic year. She flagged off 45 autorickshaws carrying promotional materials and distributed pamphlets to schoolteachers at Ripon Buildings on Saturday (March 22, 2025).
Speaking after the launch, she said the enrolment campaign will run for three months, with 45 autorickshaws operating three days a week (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) across 15 zones. Teachers will conduct door-to-door visits to encourage admissions and facilitate spot enrolments. Since March 1, 2025, 3,500 new students have been admitted to schools run by the GCC.
The Mayor said GCC manages 417 schools, including primary, middle, high, and higher secondary schools, including 336 kindergarten sections. Encouraging people to enroll kids in GCC schools, she stated that the Corporation provides classrooms with smart boards, green boards, and learning materials for kindergarten students. “The schools offer drinking water, hygienic restrooms, modern laboratories, and upgraded sports facilities.”
Students receive free uniforms, stationery, textbooks, and notebooks. Incentives are given for 100% attendance and high board exam scores. Scholarships are available for higher studies. Students are trained in sports, tailoring, and as scouts, along with self-defence training in boxing, karate, and silambam.
GCC Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran, Deputy Commissioner for Education J. Vijaya Rani, Education Standing Committee Chair T. Viswanathan, Regional Deputy Commissioners, and other officials and councillors, attended the event.
