14 MLAs nominated to MCD to address sanitation, infrastructure, and municipal challenges, potentially giving BJP an edge in upcoming polls.
After nominating 14 MLAs to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Saturday said that the role of these MLAs will be pivotal in addressing sanitation, infrastructure development, and other municipal challenges to improve the quality of life for Delhi residents.
The 14 nominated MLAs — 11 from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and three from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) — can vote in the upcoming MCD polls for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor, giving the BJP a possible edge in the upcoming civic body polls.
Mr. Gupta said that the legislators have been nominated as per provisions of the Municipal Corporation Act, 1957.
The MLAs would assist the civic body in budget formulation, civic administration, and urban governance, he added.
“These MLAs will act as a bridge between the Delhi Legislative Assembly and the MCD, ensuring seamless coordination, policy implementation, and the effective execution of civic projects. Their expertise will contribute to enhancing municipal services, strengthening urban development, and addressing pressing issues such as waste management, pollution control, and public sanitation,” the Speaker said.
The BJP, which secured 104 out of 250 wards in the 2022 civic body polls, has repeatedly claimed that AAP, which had won 134 seats, no longer enjoys a majority in the House.
Owing to the defections from AAP and the February 5 Delhi Assembly poll, which saw several sitting councillors becoming legislators, both parties now have 115 councillors each in the 238-member House. The remaining eight councillors belong to the Congress.
