Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday (March 22, 2025) said the delimitation exercise was not just about the number of Lok Sabha seats, but “our rights, our power, and our future.”
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday (March 22, 2025) said the delimitation exercise was not just about the number of Lok Sabha seats, but “our rights, our power, and our future.” Speaking at the first Joint Action Committee (JAC) meeting on delimitation held in Chennai, he said if the number of constituencies or representation of a State is reduced, then it would make the people of that State disempowered in their own country.
Mr. Stalin said the reduction in the number of Parliamentary seats or representation would invariably lead to a reduction in political strength. “With the reduction in representation, our States will have to struggle even to get the funds we rightfully deserve,” he said. The meeting was attended by Chief Ministers, former Chief Ministers, Leaders of Opposition, and others from seven States.

“Laws concerning us will be enacted without our consent. Decisions that affect our people will be made by those who do not know us and our needs,” he added.
Mr. Stalin also pointed out that women would face setbacks in achieving their due share in power and students would lose out on important opportunities. “Farmers will be left behind without support. Our culture, identity, and progress will be under great threat. The social justice that we have cherished and protected for ages will be compromised,” he added.
The Chief Minister further said people belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) would be the most affected.
He, however, made it clear that he was not opposed to any steps that would strengthen democratic representation. “But those steps should not affect fair political representation of our States. The protest is not against delimitation; I think everyone will agree that this protest is for fair delimitation,” he pointed out.
