Guntur police launch two-wheeler rally to promote helmet usage and reduce road accident fatalities, emphasizing safety and responsibility.
In a bid to curb road accident fatalities, the Guntur district police, led by Superintendent of Police S. Satish Kumar, launched a two-wheeler rally on Friday from the District Police Parade Grounds to promote helmet usage. Addressing the participants, Mr. Satish Kumar emphasised that wearing a helmet is a responsibility, not a burden, and can significantly reduce the risk of fatalities in road accidents.
Organised under the supervision of Additional SP (Admin) G.V. Ramana Murthy, the rally concluded after passing through the Three Statues Centre. Civil and traffic police personnel participated by wearing helmets and riding two-wheelers, underscoring the message that helmets are essential for safety.
Speaking at a helmet awareness event in Auto Nagar, Mr. Kumar revealed that analysis shows many two-wheeler accident deaths occur due to the lack of helmet use. He explained that this initiative prioritises education over fines, aiming to instill a sense of responsibility among riders.
Mr. Satish Kumar highlighted alarming statistics: in 2024, Guntur district recorded nearly 1,000 road accidents, with 340 of them involving two-wheelers, resulting in 130 fatalities and over 300 injuries. He stressed that helmets protect not only individuals but also their families’ future.
The awareness programme also included a street play illustrating the consequences of helmet negligence, which captivated the audience. The SP lauded Pedakakani Circle Inspector P. Narayana Swamy for organising the innovative campaign. As a gesture of encouragement, the SP personally handed roses to riders wearing helmets.
