Nagercoil City Municipal Corporation faces infrastructure challenges with major roads in dire need of restoration and widening.
The Nagercoil City Municipal Corporation was upgraded from Municipality in 2019. However, infrastructure facilities, especially roads, continue to remain in a bad shape.
The present condition of major roads in the city is yet to achieve urban standards as most of them are filled with potholes and shoddy patch works.
The Kottar-Parvathipuram stretch till the Collectorate and Cape road are in dire need of restoration. Commuters are urging the civic authorities to restore the major roads in the city and widen them to reduce bottlenecks at one of the heavily congested Chettikulam junctions.
Arun, a shop vendor on KP Road, said, “A few months ago, the authorities were seriously engaged in widening KP Road from St. Xavier’s church but after that no action was taken. And now, the widened part is used for the extended parking facility of the shops.”
The whole stretch up to the Collectorate has deteriorated from bad to worse. “The shoddy patch works done to restore the dug-up roads have made it extremely difficult for motorists to navigate the road,” he adds.
Similarly, Cape Road near Kottar region is filled with potholes. Though it is one of the most widely used stretches for heavy vehicles, with both sides lined with grocery wholesale dealers, the condition of the road has remained the same for the past few months.
Nagarajan, an auto rickshaw driver, says after complaining each time, patch works are done but no complete restoration has been carried out.
