Gram sabha meetings focus on water conservation and education in Thoothukudi district

In Thoothukudi, the gram sabha, chaired by District Collector K. Elambahavath at Avalnatham village in Kovilpatti block, highlighted the importance of water conservation and children’s education. The meeting was organised on occasion of World Water Day.
During the meeting, Mr. Elambahavath quoted a couplet from Tirukkural “Neerindri amaiyathu ulagu,” stressing that water was essential for life. He urged the people to take an active role in water conservation. He explained this year’s United Nations World Water Day, “Glacier preservation.” He advised the people to save rainwater, repair broken pipelines, and prevent water contamination.
Mr. Elambahavath encouraged the people to plant more trees and work towards improving the water table. He emphasised on the importance of education ensuring that all children in the village attended school.
At the meeting, the Collector reviewed the village’s public fund expenditure and audit reports. He ensured that the government schemes, including clean drinking water initiatives, MGNREGS and other welfare programmes had reached the people. Additionally, he highlighted the risks of heat-related illness and urged villagers to take precaution.
In Kanniyakumari District, Collector R. Alagumeena attended the gram sabha held at Beemanagari village of Thovalai block. At the meeting, she assessed the implementation of various schemes, including open defacation free plus model village, Jal Jeevan mission, swachh bharat mission and others.
She exhorted the villages to plant more trees and explained about the State government’s initiative to establish mini forests across the State to mitigate the climate change hazards.
Ms. Algumeena highlighted the rich water resource of Kanniyakumari district, contrasting it with dry regions where people must walk several km to fetch drinking water. She urged the residents to preserve these water resources for future generations.
