Forest Department increases vigilance after leopard kills cow calf near Puravipalayam village in Coimbatore, deploying camera traps for tracking.
The Forest Department has stepped up vigil after a cow calf was killed by a leopard at a farm near Puravipalayam village in Coimbatore district last week.
The farm, owned by Balasubramaniam, is located around five k.m off Vadakkipalayam - Nadapuni Road and around nine k.m away from Tamil Nadu - Kerala boundary. The nearest forest boundary is 30 k.m away.
Forest Department staff attached to the Anamalai Tiger Reserve Pollachi range found pug marks of a carnivore from the farm, and confirmed the presence of a leopard. A day after the killing, the leopard had returned to feed on the remains of the carcass.
Following demands from farmers and the public, department officials placed a cage with the remains of the carcass placed inside to trap the leopard, but it did not return. Forest Department officials suspect that the leopard could be moving between farms in the locality.
Pollachi Forest Range Officer K. Gnanabalamurugan said 15 camera traps have been placed at different locations to track the movement of the leopard.
According to him, frontline staff of the Department are camping at the location to respond swiftly upon receiving alerts on the movement of the carnivore.
