Calcutta High Court finds evidence of custodial torture of SFI activist, raises concerns about missing CCTV footage.
Calcutta High Court on Thursday (April 3, 2025) said that they have found evidence of custodial torture of a Students Federation of India (SFI) activist at the Medinipur Police station.
The case was heard at Justice Tirthankar Ghosh’s court. Questions were raised about custodial torture and why the police had only submitted CCTV footage of 13 hours within the 17 hours of available footage from the police station. He asked about the four hours of missing footage in this case.
According to the lawyer of the case, Shamim Ahmed, the judge questioned why the student activist, Sucharita Das was pulled by her hair and stated that the footage the judge had received showed evidence of it.
Sucharita Das, who had filed the case, told The Hindu that the judge had also raised questions about why there was wax present at the police station and what purpose it was used for.
The justice also told the state Advocate General Kishore Dutt, “The police station is not in order. Tell the DG to take action. Otherwise, I will be forced to give strict orders.”
He directed the State administration to ensure that they restructure the Paschim Medinipur Women’s Police Station. He also expressed concerns about how that particular police station is functioning.
“I don’t want to pronounce in open court, but issues of assault have surfaced in the CCTV. That’s why I am telling you...this I can’t allow. Irrespective of whether they are political opponents or students,” Justice Ghosh further added.

In addition to enforcement, BMRCL plans to roll out a wide-reaching awareness campaign aimed at educating commuters about the ill-effects and penalties associated with using tobacco products in metro areas. Officials have appealed to the public to support the initiative and help maintain a pleasant commuting environment for all.
