Clash between NTK and TPDK cadres at CSI Brough Memorial Church in Erode, pacified by police intervention.
Tension prevailed for some time outside the CSI Brough Memorial Church at Panneerselvam Park in Erode on Sunday (February 2, 2025) afternoon as a clash erupted between Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) and Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK) cadres. Police intervened, pacified the cadres, and brought the situation under control.
NTK candidate M. K. Seethalakshmi had obtained permission to distribute pamphlets and seek votes from visitors to the church. After the prayers, as people were leaving, she, along with over 100 cadres, began campaigning. Meanwhile, a few TPDK cadres, clad in black shirts, arrived and started distributing pamphlets highlighting Dravidar Kazhagam founder Periyar E.V. Ramasamy’s contributions to Erode during his tenure as chairman of the Erode Municipality in 1917.
Tensions escalated when TPDK cadres raised slogans hailing Periyar, which NTK cadres objected to. A heated exchange ensued, leading to physical altercations. NTK cadres tore the pamphlets distributed by TPDK. Police intervened and dispersed the 10-member TPDK group from the scene. Though the issue was resolved, uneasiness persisted as NTK cadre continued raising slogans against Periyar.
