Deputy CM directs BMRCL to prepare DPR for extending Orange Line in Bengaluru, fulfilling residents' long-standing demand for improved connectivity.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has directed Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for extending the proposed Orange Line — Phase 3 of Namma Metro — from Kadabagere to Tavarekere village. The move is being termed as a long-standing demand of residents of Seegehalli Gate, Channenahalli, and Tavarekere in Bengaluru.
The second corridor of the Orange Line spans 12.5 km from Hosahalli to Kadabagere along Magadi Road, featuring nine stations. .
Residents have been vocal about the need for an extension, arguing that it will significantly improve public transportation in the rapidly developing areas, which are now semi-urban localities. A resident of Tavarekere, Ravi Kumar, said, “Every day, we struggle to find reliable transport to commute to the city. If the metro reaches Tavarekere, it will change our lives, making travel more predictable and reducing our dependence on buses and private vehicles.”
A resident from Channenahalli, Manjunath R., said, “Tavarekere and surrounding villages are growing fast, with more people moving here. There is huge real estate activity happening here but public transport connectivity is lacking. Many of us work at Peenya and other industrial areas, and having the metro service will cut down our travel time drastically.”
Meanwhile, Yeshwantpur MLA S.T. Somashekar said he had written to Mr. Shivakumar, who is also Bengaluru Development Minister, requesting the extension of the Orange Line. “I had written to Mr. Shivakumar after the residents of these villages urged for the metro extension. Now, the Minister has directed officials to prepare the DPR. Many villages in and around Tavarekere will benefit if this extension happens since these areas are growing rapidly,” said Mr. Somashekar.
Confirming the directive, a senior BMRCL official said, “We have received directions from the Deputy Chief Minister and are looking into the process for preparing the DPR. The Orange Line was proposed as per the Comprehensive Mobility Plan for Bengaluru, which was prepared in 2020. This plan identified major travel corridors and recommended mass rapid transit systems for Phase 3.”
Namma Metro’s Phase 3 consists of two elevated corridors. The first is a 32.15-km line linking J.P. Nagar Phase 4 to Kempapura via the western side of the Outer Ring Road, featuring 21 stations. The second is a 12.5-km line along Magadi Road, connecting Hosahalli to Kadabagere, featuring nine stations. The Phase 3 project was approved in 2024 by both the Karnataka government and the Union Cabinet at an estimated cost of ₹15,611 crore. The Karnataka government will bear 80-85% of the expenses, while the Union government will cover the rest.
