CITU opposes private steel plant at Nakkapalli, accusing governments of weakening Vizag Steel Plant for private interests.
Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) State general secretary Ch. Narasinga Rao on Monday said that the CITU is strongly opposed to the establishment of the private steel plant at Nakkapalli in Anakapalli district. He alleged that it was a ploy by the Union and the State governments to weaken the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP).
Addressing a media conference, along with CPI(M) district general secretary R.K.S.V. Kumar, here on Tuesday, Mr. Narasinga Rao said that Vizag Steel was acclaimed as top quality steel in South India with high sales in the southern States. He alleged that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre and the TDP-JSP-BJP alliance government in Andhra Pradesh were planning to hand over the VSP to Arcelor Mittal plant, which was planning to set up its plant at Nakkapalli.
He recalled that a public hearing was conducted in 2000 in connection with the proposed Visakhapatnam Chennai Petro Corridor. A committee was formed by the State government on the proposal to establish a port at Nakkapalli. The committee had opposed the port at Nakkapalli. He alleged that it was done to safeguard the interests of Ambani’s Reliance, and now the State government was keen on protecting the interests of private steel plant at Nakkapalli.
Mr. Narasinga Rao called upon the people to express their resentment during the proposed visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Visakhapatnam on January 8.
The Karnataka government’s decision to implement a 15% hike in bus fares across all four State-run transport corporations, effective on January 5, has sparked widespread dissatisfaction among commuters. Many expressed concerns over the increased financial burden, particularly daily travellers who rely heavily on public transport.
